In the midst of sadness comes comedy

Sunday afternoon, our dear friend Mike was involved in a terrible accident.  He was building a deck at his inlaw's house when something went wrong, sending a post catapulting into the side of his head.  He has a fractured skull, fractured cheekbone, fractured jaw and a deep gash in his neck.  Although it's pretty serious now, he is out of ICU and for the time being, they don't think he's going to need to have his jaw wired shut.  He'll be out of commission for a while, but is expected to make a full recovery.  The family could certainly use prayers!

Now that he's doing so much better, I can share a really funny story that happened as a result of this.  I had their two children stay the night at my house Sunday night.  Because I felt they needed some bit of home while at my house, I had them bring their Yorkie, Cooper, too.  Cooper and Cruiser are buddies, running around whenever they're together, playing, rough housing, chatting...I think they had a lot of fun together, too.

Yesterday afternoon, I had Cooper on his leash, with his harness collar.  I was hooking Cruiser to his outdoor run.  Since I was only going to keep them outside for a few minutes, I didn't bother to wear shoes.  Suddenly, Cooper did this twisty thing that got him out of his harness collar. Once he realized he was free, he took off.  I was so startled, I didn't get Cruiser hooked to the lead.  He took off after Cooper.  I'm chasing them up my backyard, yelling at them to stop.  I came to the back alley, just in time to see them crossing the busy street.  I also saw a Jewell student.  I hollered, "Can you grab them for me, please?"  Cruiser immediately rolled over and he got hold of him.  Cruiser saw yet another opportunity for escape, and took full advantage, racing up hills, down steps, through yards, up and down alleys...you name it, he was there.  I was as close on his heels as possible considering I was lugging MY extra weight PLUS Cruiser, and in my bare feet.

Finally, the Jewell student grabbed Cooper.  I hadn't even realized the student was still in the hunt!  I was completely out of breath by this time, sweating profusely, and in pain from my bare feet.  I thanked the guy as much as I could but not even CLOSE to enough as he deserves.  He nonchalantly said, "No problem," waved, and walked back up the hill to the college. I hope he knows how much I appreciate what he did.

In the meantime, today I feel the after effects of every muscle I used to chase down Cooper.  My back, hips and legs are feeling muscles I think they forgot they had.  But as I told Darren last night, I ran all that way and lived to tell about it.  I bet it would have been easier in tennis shoes.  Maybe I should give that a try someday!
