Is Tuesday too late to talk about my weekend?

Sunday was a special day in my family. My Aunt Elva celebrated her 90th birthday. Elva was the oldest of the three Collins Girls. Elva, Velma (my Grandma) and Nelda. Elva is the only one remaining. Grandpa passed away in 1987 after breaking her hip. Nelda passed away in 1997 (I believe) of cancer.

Let me give you a little insight into Aunt Elva. She is feisty, and elegant. Always perfectly coiffed, often with red fingernails. She has a huge smile and big beautiful eyes. She knows life, and doesn't hesitate to teach you something at every turn of the road. She is a genius at figuring out the postal system. Cards ALWAYS arrive on the date they are intended. Her memory is as sharp as a tack, and when she corrects me on something I may be remembering differently, I don't hesitate to believe that she knows it better than I do!  She still volunteers at a local hospital. She is beyond amazing.

After Mama died, and Mikey was born, her goal was to get her hands on that baby. I have a precious picture of Elva on my old loveseat, snuggling with Mikey, barely a week old. I love this picture. She is still good friends with Uncle Glenn, who was Nelda's husband. She kept in contact with my Grandpa until he died. Family is so important to her!

There were over 200 people at her party, can you believe it? Aunts, uncles, cousins. Babies! Friends, loved ones. Two great big sheet cakes with RED flowers, because Aunt Elva's all about the red! Not nearly enough chairs to hold all of us who came to celebrate her special day. Speeches, cards, and memories. It was special.

Unfortunately, Uncle Glenn stumbled and fell coming into the church, and ended up in the hospital overnight with a broken nose, messed up hand, and a few loose teeth. I'm so sad, because I love my Uncle Glenn dearly, and it breaks my heart to know he's hurting like that.

Other than that, it was a special time. Uncle Victor rode with us, and we stopped at Dairy Queen for lunch (penny pinching...we had the kid meals) and Vickie bought dinner for me (thanks, Sis!).  Lots of hours on the road could have resorted in grumpy children, but they really got along well. I'm proud of them.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, AUNT ELVA!
