T-bones T-riffic
I have always wanted to go to a minor league baseball game. Last night was my chance.
The Kansas City T-Bones are an independent team in the Northern League. Apparently, they came when we were in Texas, because I had no idea that there was a team so close!
Darren's company had Swiss Re night at the T Bones last night. We got tickets, $50 in cash coupons for concessions, a foam finger, and really nice Swiss Re baseball hats. We sat together and had a really good time.
The boys played in the playground. Their favorite game was when they shot nerf footballs out of a machine. We were practically on top of the field which gave a great perspective on the game. The mascot came by a couple of times. People had blankets and were picnicking just beyond the outfield fence. It was just a different atmosphere.
Fans were invited to become a part of the game. They were invited on the field between innings to win prizes. The marketing guys were on top of the dugouts making announcements. It was so laid back, so fun! Just what baseball SHOULD be. Anytime a foul ball went out of the ballpark, there was a sound of breaking glass, and a shout out, "There's another broken windshield! Don't forget to visit Kryger glass!" This happened often. One guy behind us went to his car between innings, and found a baseball on the ground (no car damage, thank goodness). There was even a bullseye in the outfield, "Hit a homerun here and win $100,000!" It was fun.
These guys are playing this game because they love it. They aren't the best athletes, but they are GOOD. They hustle down the basepaths after an infield hit, because they LOVE the game. There is a rare camaraderie on the team, with teammates, standing just outside of the dugout, root for their teammate. Former major leaguers play to hang on to their dreams.
It was just like a scene from my favorite movie, "Bull Durham." I loved it.
I encourage you to grab your kids and take them to a minor league baseball game. Rediscover why this was always the American game. Find the love for the spirit of the game. It is worth it!

Glad you had fun! I can't believe I've never heard of this team.
Oh, your t-bones outgoing link needs fixed....it starts with your own website link for some reason. I had to retype it to get it to work.
