It can never be a quiet day, can it?

But that's not neccessarily a bad thing!

We've just had a lot going on lately. Most of it really good.

Mikey may have diabetes. I've been diabetic for 35 years. It really consumed my childhood, and made me feel like a freak. Think about it...at that time, it was really a devastating disease to have. It was the #3 killer, and it was a bad death. Blindness, kidney disease, heart disease, amputation. Lots of limitations.  These days, it's just a nuisance, but it's very easy to have a good life with diabetes.

Wednesday night, we had dinner at Perkins, and Matt was acting unusual. I decided to take his blood sugar when we got home. His was normal, at 102. I took Emily's (114), then Mikey's. His was 186. I chalked it up to the fact that we had eaten dinner 2 hours before, and asked him if we could take it in the morning. When we did, it was 136. Still way too high for a fasting blood sugar. I called his pediatrician and she asked me to bring him into the office. He was spilling some protein and ketones in his urine, so we're set up for an endocrinology consult on Wednesday.  He's been taking his blood sugar twice a day, and he's doing it very well all by himself. Which is bittersweet to me. He's been borderline high.  I never thought Mikey would get it. He's so incredibly active, and he prefers healthy food. We'll see how he does.

Wednesday was also dress rehearsal for Dance for the Cure. Every summer, our dance studio does a benefit for breast cancer research. Emily is in 3 numbers. Matt and I are in 1 each. Emily is doing cheer, and it ends with the girls forming a breast cancer ribbon with their pink poms. It brings tears to my eyes. I lost my Mama to breast cancer, so this is a cause near and dear to my heart.  Em is also doing the adult number with me, to "Big Dollhouse" from Broadway's Hairspray, and she's doing a jazz number to "We Can't Stop the Beat," from Hairspray.  Matt's doing a hip hop number to Michael Jackson's Thriller.  I'm doing the adult number with Emily. The event is outside. Last year, we just had 1 costume each. No biggie. this year, though, we have 5 costumes. I'm going to take my Shepherd's Hook from the backyard, and hang our costumes on it. A folding table with a mirror, and to hold our makeup et all, and I think we're good to go!  Yes, I'll take pictures.

Okay...it's now the next morning, and I never finished writing this. I'll update more later.

I have struggled with diabetes for 15 years myself and hate to see my little Dillan struggle with the same things I fought off. She has a pump, but after she eats she wants to go play, not count how many carbs she consumed. Like you said, now its just a pain in the rear, but it still stinks for kids to have to deal with it!
